Housing Stability & Homelessness Prevention Program
Introducing the Housing Stability & Homelessness Prevention Program
Nearly 50% of renters in North Carolina are cost-burdened, which leaves many households one emergency away from losing their home. Few resources exist to step in early, before an individual or family ever reaches a shelter.
That’s the gap our new Housing Stability & Homelessness Prevention Program is built to fill. Launched by the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, the program pairs timely financial assistance with one-on-one housing problem solving support and serves all 100 counties of North Carolina.
Who It Helps
The program serves renters living in Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) properties who are at imminent risk of a housing crisis and earn at or below 80% of Area Median Income. That might be a household facing a threatened eviction that can still be mediated, a renter who can’t cover a month or two of rent because of an unexpected financial hardship, or a household who has an upcoming expense that will threaten their ability to pay rent.
What Participants Receive
-
-
A personalized 90-day housing stabilization plan
-
Financial assistance for rent, utilities, or another expense impacting their housing
-
Lease review and budgeting support
-
Warm handoffs to other housing and support services in their community
-
How to Refer a Household
Referrals can be sent by Balance of State Continuum of Care regional committees, other North Carolina Continuums of Care, or Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) property management companies who will have access to the intake form. Once referred, NCCEH staff will connect with the applying household to complete next steps. Funds are limited, and households will be served in order of intake forms received.
Help Us Spread the Word
If you work with renters in LIHTC properties, whether as a property manager or service provider, please share this program within your community! The pilot will open on Monday, November 2 for applications.
