Substance Use and Brain Injury: Managing Care in the Community
Support for this workshop is provided by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services and the Health Resources Services Administration, Grant Contract #2009.
Whether we consider the high rates of intoxication at the time of injury, the new problems with substance use that develop post brain injury or the high prevalence of brain injury in people presenting for treatment of substance use, it is clear that substance use and brain injury make a particularly damaging combination. This course will provide an overview of the epidemiology of brain injury and substance use, an introduction to screening for brain injury and neuro-cognitive impairment as well as practical strategies for accommodating people living with the impact of brain injury in your clinical practice.
Objectives:
- To increase awareness of the relationship between problematic substance and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
- To learn how to screen for the presence of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and cognitive impairment.
- To introduce intervention strategies to accommodate people living with neurocognitive and neurobehavioral impairments.
- To become aware of basic concepts of treatment planning and case management in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and substance use.
- To network with providers who are also interested in the dual diagnosis of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and substance use.
Credit:
- 6.00 Contact Hours (category A) CE for NC Psychologists - The program will provide (Category A) Continuing Education for Psychologists.
- 6.00 CEU - Continuing Education Unit
- 6.00 Contact Hours - Certificate of completion based on a 60-minute teaching hour

Resource Strategies for Homeless Veterans Training
This face-to-face TA seminar is intended to assist nonprofits to increase their capacity to access resources and improve their program approaches serving homeless veterans. The specific topics addressed include grant opportunities through Federal partners (VA, HUD, DOL/VETS), as well as emerging needs and best practice approaches to assist with resource planning and development.
Who Should Attend:
Mission-driven, homeless veteran nonprofit providers or community-based, nonprofit organizations either interested in applying for funds or currently receiving funding to create and operate permanent housing for homeless veterans.
