Multi-day Event
Conference

The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is sponsoring two national training conferences in September for Continuum of Care (CoC) representatives, Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS) administrators, and ESG and HPRP grantees. The conference program will be offered in two different cities, Denver, Colorado and Atlanta, Georgia. Each conference will focus on HMIS implementation, Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) participation, and the important changes made to HUD’s McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Programs by the 2009 HEARTH Act. Attendees will learn how the HEARTH Act amendments may affect local planning and project operations going forward and hear about steps to be taken in preparation for transitioning to new requirements.

The conferences will include a mix of breakout sessions and workshops designed to provide attendees with the information and tools they need to begin planning for changes to local and state programs, planning and project operation. The program also offers attendees an important opportunity to learn about requirements for electronic reporting on homeless programs in a hands-on environment. Among the topics to be covered are:

* Transition issues and building a foundation for success;
* Using HMIS Data for CoC planning;
* System planning and redesign;
* HPRP and system transformation;
* AHAR for new and experienced communities; and
* Strategies for implementing rural programs.

Who should attend the training conferences
HUD strongly encourages HMIS administrators and CoC leaders to attend as well as ESG and HPRP grantees. HUD reserves the right to limit the number of attendees per CoC and/or HMIS implementing jurisdiction due to space limitations.
* CoC leader, administrator or other decision maker
* HMIS system administrator
* ESG grants manager
* HPRP grants manager

Training/Webinar

"VAWA and Housing: Past, Present, & Future"

This webinar will follow the evolution of the Violence Against Women Act's housing protections for domestic violence survivors.

Speakers will address the social and legislative history behind the introduction of these protections, their efficacy in combating discrimination against survivors, and how their strengths and limitations have shaped goals for the Act's pending reauthorization. Participants will gain an understanding of the existing terms of the Act and the gap between statutory language and implementation, as well as an appreciation for the potential for VAWA reauthorization to serve as a vehicle for enhanced enforcement.

A window into the advocacy efforts of a national coalition of legal professionals, the event will feature speakers from a range of organizational backgrounds:
  • Rachel Natelson of the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty,
  • Sandra Park of the American Civil Liberties Union,
  • Meliah Schultzman of the National Housing Law Project, and
  • Kate Walz of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law.
