Accessing Emergency Shelter and Housing Resources
HUD requires that each Continuum of Care have a coordinated process for accessing homeless and housing services. These processes can be called by a variety of names, such as Coordinated Access, Coordinated Assessment, Coordinated Entry, or Coordinated Intake.
Below you will find information about how to access emergency homeless services and housing programs in your community.

The Balance of State Continuum of Care is made up of 79 mostly rural counties in North Carolina. These counties are coordinated through Regional Committees. Each Regional Committee has designed a Coordinated Assessment process for their area. For homeless families with children, please contact the Durham Department of Social Services for assistance with finding an emergency shelter:

The department’s “Emergency Services” division interviews people Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM. People can call to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome, and ordinarily will be seen on the same day, if they arrive by 3 PM.
For single adults who need shelter, please contact Urban Ministries of Durham, which is the main point of entry for shelter, triage and services:

Accepts walk-ins for shelters on Monday mornings. Requests for emergency shelter at other times must be made via referrals from a community agency.
Survivors of domestic violence may contact Durham Crisis Response Center directly: 919-489-3652.
Families and single adults also may seek shelter and housing assistance from the Durham Rescue Mission which operates independently of Durham's’ Coordinated Intake and Assessment processes: 919-688-9641.

The Coordinated Intake process can be initiated through shelters and other organizations. If you are not already in a shelter, please call 2-1-1 to be referred to an appropriate shelter or organization to complete the coordinated intake process. 2-1-1 is available 24 hours a day/7 days a week for assistance.
If you are receiving services from a local shelter, the H.O.T. Project, Empowerment Project, or an overflow shelter, please ask agency staff about the Coordinated Intake process.
Please make sure to remain in contact with your homeless service provider until the Coordinated Intake process is completed.
